Wicked Ways
Haunted highways and roads you shouldn't drive alone.
Short episodes about the roads themselves: the stretch with a tombstone every mile, the curve where a bride in white flags down drivers, the ten miles of New Jersey where the police chief says the imagination goes nuts. Each one covers the legend, the real history underneath it, and how to drive it yourself. Rule one, from everyone who has ever written about these roads: never get out of your car.

Week 2
Route 2A
Haynesville, Maine
Before the interstate, the potato trucks ran a winding stretch of Route 2A through the Haynesville Woods in Aroostook County, with a ninety-degree turn that filled the ditches. Dick Curless had a hit about it in 1965: "A Tombstone Every Mile." The road's ghost is a bride in white who waves down drivers to say her husband needs help, then vanishes near the end of the woods; in one telling the crash was on their wedding day and she froze to death on the shoulder. Two girls killed by tractor-trailers in August 1967 are said to walk it too.
Then there is the Flesher Witch, a nineteenth-century tale of a newcomer named Annie Wilcox, an old woman with a face like melting wax, and a family that came apart one member at a time. The melting face sounds like a modern addition, and the episode says so.

Week 7
Clinton Road
West Milford, New Jersey
Ten miles from Route 23 to Upper Greenwood Lake, and every legend in the state seems to live on it. The ghost boy under the bridge at Dead Man's Curve who returns the coin you throw, or pushes you in. Phantom headlights and a black truck that chases you to the end. A blue 1988 Camaro with a dead girl at the wheel. Two park rangers killed in 1939. The ruins of Cross Castle, built in 1905 and razed in 1988, with its rumors of robes and rituals. A "Druid temple" that is really an 1826 iron furnace. Albinos, a hellhound, escaped animals from the Jungle Habitat park up the road.
And one thing that is not a legend: in May 1983 a cyclist found a body in a garbage bag off the road, and the man eventually convicted of the killing was the mob contract killer Richard Kuklinski, the Iceman. The traffic light at Route 23 is said to be the longest wait in the country. That part, at least, you can verify.
"It's a long, desolate stretch and makes the imagination go nuts."
