Extra Baggage

The thread we couldn't let go of.

All shows

Extended episodes. After every main episode, Steve and Nathan get a bit weirder and a lot deeper about one of the folklore threads they covered: a theory they only had time to raise, a witness story that deserved the full hour, or the thing locals told them off-mic. The full episode is exclusive to members of the Weird Travel Club and drops the Tuesday after its main episode; everyone else gets a short public preview that same morning.

    Week 10

    Chestnut Ridge: Extra Baggage

    Chestnut Ridge, Pennsylvania

Extra Baggage chases the strangest Kecksburg theory: that the acorn was the Nazi Bell, a bell-shaped wonder weapon with counter-rotating cylinders of a purplish liquid metal called Xerum 525, developed in a Silesian mine and lost at the end of the war. The claim surfaced in 2000 through a Polish author, was popularized by The Hunt for Zero Point, and was pinned to Kecksburg by the History Channel. The hosts lay out why most historians call it a hoax built on recycled rumor, and why it refuses to die.

Did occult rituals wake something in Wisconsin's lakes? Extra Baggage follows the 1992 robed ritual at Whitewater Lake, a 1923 tentacle attack on two fishermen, the Devil's Lake drought legend, and the Milwaukee correspondence between H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Bloch that led to Arkham House being founded in Sauk City. Then a tour of the state's thirteen lake monsters, and a detour to Loch Ness, where Aleister Crowley's failed ritual at Boleskine House preceded the modern monster by a generation.

    Nevada City: Extra Baggage

    Nevada City, California

Two reports from the national UFO database, read in full. In August 1980 a cabin of sick campers at a summer camp northwest of town was enveloped in a debilitating white noise, saw equations and hieroglyphs behind their eyes, and smelled something vile; in the morning a girl asked if they had seen the bowler-hat object that hovered over their cabin for half an hour. In July 1986 a father and two daughters driving the Yuba River road toward North San Juan were followed by four golden saucers that hummed, flashed rings of light, and shot off east while a stranger stood beside his car at the bridge, looking up.
